EIB Chief Calviño Calls for Accelerated European Energy Independence
The head of the European Investment Bank, Nadia Calviño, stated that Europe must speed up its push for energy independence and break free from excessive dependence on fossil fuels. Her call for intensified action coincided with the European Union's backing of a new tariff agreement for the Vertical Gas Corridor supply route.
Calviño's Call for Energy Autonomy
In a statement on March 27, EIB chief Nadia Calviño declared, "We need to double down" on energy autonomy. Calviño, who leads the world's largest public bank, framed the accelerated pursuit of energy independence as a critical strategic objective for the continent. She explicitly called for Europe to break free from "excessive dependence on fossil fuels."
EU Backs New Gas Corridor Tariff Deal
Concurrently, the European Union backed a new Vertical Gas Corridor tariff deal. The agreement establishes a new tariff structure for the gas supply route, finalized between the European Commission and gas grid operators from Greece, Bulgaria, Romania, Moldova, and Ukraine. The deal is designed to strengthen the operational framework of the corridor, which serves as a key infrastructure link for gas supplies.
