European Union Mandates Digital Identity Wallets for Member States by 2026
The European Union is implementing its updated eIDAS 2.0 regulation, which mandates that all member states provide a Digital Identity Wallet to their citizens. The requirement, confirmed by a report from European Business Review, sets a deadline for national implementation by the end of 2026.
The Regulatory Mandate
The core provision of the updated eIDAS regulation is the establishment of a pan-European digital identity framework. According to the report, every EU Member State is required to provide a Digital Identity Wallet to comply with the new rules. This tool, formally referred to as the EU Digital Identity Wallet, is defined as a Digital Identity Wallet under the regulation.
Implementation Timeline
The regulation provides a clear deadline for this rollout. Member states must make their Digital Identity Wallets available to the public by December 31, 2026. This requirement forms the central actionable component of the eIDAS 2.0 legislative package, aiming to create a standardized digital identity system across the bloc.
Why this matters: This mandate will allow EU citizens to use a single, secure digital ID for accessing government services, opening bank accounts, and signing documents across all member states, simplifying cross-border interactions and online verification.
